The BMI IDENTIFICATION chart is intended primarily for use in the community to early signs of overweight/obesity. The Chief Medical Officer for England has recommended action at PCT level not only to identify the signs but also to offer interventions at an early stage. The chart features the International Obesity Task Force definitions of obesity and overweight from 2yrs onwards thus giving the practitioner exact points at which they can make their diagnosis. The Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health recommends that children displaying severe or progressive obesity are referred before age 2. The chart also features the standard BMI centile range (99.6th% – 0.4th%) and the centile range which delineates a health weight.
The first UK waist circumference charts are featured on the reverse. It is recommended that practitioners take waist circumference measures prior to referring overweight treatment for medical attention in order not to refer the well-built, athletic child who may have a high BMI but is not at all obese.
